staff and students protest unfair dismissals

About SaveCityU

In the summer of 2010, the then SaveCityU.com senior administrator was targetted by senior members of the academic staff of the School of Law at CityU and put under severe pressure to close the site. Following the temporary suspension of access, the domain and its administration was passed to a new, independent group, and has now been resurrected.

The current administrators of the site are consequently independent of the university and/or any of its associations or groups. We welcome news items, opinions and comments from anyone interested in the future of CityU. However, please see the note below regarding comments about other staff members.

Background

In early 2009 the Senior Management of the City University of Hong Kong terminated the employment contracts of over 100 instructors and other teaching staff. The then Provost unilaterally overturned the recommendations of both Departmental and College/Faculty Staffing Review Panels. After many months of protests, the Provost resigned. This site was set up at that time to allow staff an alternative means of venting their frustrations about the direction that CityU was, and is, taking.

But…

Comments concerning or pertaining to the performance of a particular faculty or teaching staff in relation to courses or programmes taught or administered by those persons will be removed. SaveCityU.com is provided as a news source for the dissemination of information—and as forum for discussion—regarding issues surrounding the actions of senior management since early 2009, and University policy towards staff at all levels within City University. Issues or complaints about a particular faculty member, teaching staff, or course should be addressed through more appropriate channels.
